John Nichols and Robert W. McChesney of the Nation wrote an interesting piece about the decline of newspapers and its effect on civil society. As with most "progressives" they diagnose real illnesses, but propose treatments that at best will be ineffective or at the worst will engender unintended consequences that will be worse than the original ailment. And not surprisingly their solutions are quite costly:
"All totaled, the suggestions we make here for subscription subsidies, postal reforms, youth media and investment in public broadcasting have a price tag in the range of $60 billion over the next three years."
With Obama's fetish for failed companies something tells me that a newspaper bailout will be on the way. Only time will tell.
