Media, The Great Hysteria Maker
Most people believe that violence has been on the rise, but in his book The Better Angles Of Our Nature, Harvard Psychologist Steven Pinker presents compelling data that even when we factor in horrific events like World War II and the Holocaust, violence has been on the decline. I suspect that some of this stems from medical and hygienic advances that allow individuals injured in warfare or criminal instances to survive, however there is no escaping the fact that the per capita rate of murder has plummeted in the last millennium. Few people are aware of this because the media is the great hysteria maker knows that fear sells. I believe this is one of several factors that have had a corrosive effect of community life in the United States.
